What is the route of the Budapest Marathon 2026
The marathon starts at Pázmány Péter sétány, on the Buda side next to the Lágymányos campus of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE). Due to the large number of participants, the organisers use a zoned start, with each group setting off a few minutes apart based on expected pace.
In the opening kilometres the route crosses the Danube via Liberty Bridge into Pest, following the riverside promenade before heading north. The course links several of the city's most famous bridges — including the Chain Bridge, Margaret Bridge and Árpád Bridge — with constant views over the river.
In the central section, the route heads into the heart of Pest along the historic Andrássy Avenue and past Heroes' Square, before returning towards the Danube alongside the Hungarian Parliament and Buda Castle, two of the most photographed buildings in the Hungarian capital.
The final kilometres come back along the Buda riverside to close the loop at Pázmány Péter sétány. The cut-off time to finish is 5 hours 30 minutes from the start of the last wave, followed by a sweep bus that picks up runners unable to keep that pace.
Key kilometer points of the Budapest Marathon 2026

- Km 38-42,195 — Vuelta a Buda y meta
Los últimos kilómetros regresan por la orilla de Buda hasta cerrar el círculo en el Pázmány Péter sétány.
Where to stay for the Budapest Marathon 2026
The start and finish are at Pázmány Péter sétány, on the Buda side, a university area a bit away from the tourist centre, so most runners prefer to stay in the centre and travel there on race day.
District V (Pest's historic centre), along the Danube, is the most practical area: well connected to the start and very close to the route itself, which passes landmarks like Andrássy Avenue and the Hungarian Parliament.
The Corvin neighbourhood, close to the start area itself, is another option worth considering if you'd rather minimise travel on race day.
Getting there from the airport for the Budapest Marathon 2026
Budapest Airport (Ferenc Liszt) is connected to the centre by bus 100E, a direct service reaching Deák Ferenc tér in about 40 minutes, stopping at Kálvin tér and Astoria metro stations.
The bus runs 24/7, every 5-10 minutes during the day. The ticket costs 2,500 HUF and must be bought on board by card; regular public transport tickets are not valid.
A taxi is the most direct alternative if you'd rather avoid transfers, especially useful if you're travelling with more luggage than usual.
