What is the route of the Maratón de Lisboa 2026
The Lisbon Marathon is widely regarded as one of the most scenic marathons in Europe thanks to its stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Tagus River. The race begins in the coastal town of Cascais, where runners start with several kilometers directly alongside the ocean on the famous waterfront road leading towards Lisbon.
For much of the race, the course follows the coastline through iconic locations such as Estoril, Carcavelos and Oeiras. This section features long, flat straights and a generally favorable profile, allowing runners to maintain a steady pace while enjoying some of the finest coastal scenery found in any European marathon.
As the route approaches Lisbon, the Atlantic gradually gives way to the estuary of the Tagus River, which accompanies runners for several kilometers along the waterfront. Although elevation gain is minimal, wind can become an important factor on the more exposed coastal stretches, making group running a useful strategy.
The final kilometers pass through some of Lisbon's most modern districts before reaching the finish line beside the historic Praça do Comércio, one of Portugal's most famous landmarks. This spectacular riverside finish makes the Lisbon Marathon a unique event, combining a fast course with breathtaking scenery from start to finish.
